YOUR Landscaping Project

At Straight Edge Landscaping, we understand that outdoor projects need to balance qualitycompliance, and long-term durability. Below are practical tips to help you plan retaining walls, boundary fencing and driveways with confidence — and avoid common council or construction issues that can cause delays or unexpected costs.

Council & Compliance (Hunter, Newcastle & Central Coast)

  • Most councils require approval for walls over 600mm, or any wall supporting a fence, driveway or structure.
  • Properties in sloped estates (common in Maitland, Thornton, Chisholm and Cameron Park) may require engineer-certified designs, even at lower heights.
  • Retaining walls along boundaries may require written neighbour consent and clear identification of which property benefits from the retained fill.
  • Drainage is heavily regulated — councils can require weep holes, ag-line drainage and proper backfill to prevent runoff impacting neighbouring properties.

Construction Tips

  • Invest in a solid foundation: concrete sleeper walls need galvanised steel H- and C-posts with appropriate footing depth based on soil type.
  • Ensure drainage blankets and crushed rock are used behind the wall, not soil alone — this is one of the biggest factors in long-term stability.
  • Consider future landscaping early (gardens, stairs, lighting) so conduits and access points can be installed before the wall is backfilled.

Practical Hints

  • Tiered walls help reduce engineering requirements and improve the visual appeal of sloping yards.
  • Darker coloured sleepers or sandstone walls tend to blend best with Hunter Region soil tones.
  • Allow space for mowing strips to reduce maintenance and keep the wall looking clean.
